Football final too much for young fan as heart gives out
The Italy-France World Cup final proved too much for one avid young football fan who died while watching the game.
TeerayuthNoonyod,25,a supermarket employee, was found dead by his aunt, Suna, on a camp bed on the balcony of his four-storey commercial building in Ratchathewi district.
Mrs Suna said they had watched television together until late on Sunday night.
She went to bed but Teerayuth told her he intended to stay up and watch the game. She awoke at about 6am to the sound of the television still blaring and found him dead.
Police said that there were no signs of struggle or wounds on Teerayuth's body. The probable cause of death was a heart attack. He had been dead for a few hours, which put his death at some time near the end of the game which Italy won 5-3 on a penalty shootout after being drawn 1-1 at full time.
The end of the tournament brought an end to a torrent of local betting on football, with police warning they will redouble efforts to stamp out gambling during the coming European football season.
During the one-month World Cup, Bangkok police arrested more than 700people on football gambling-related charges and seized betting slips worth more than 200 million baht.
Police say they are now watching closely for a rise in crimes such as theft and assault as desperate punters try to pay off their gambling debts.
City police chief Pol Lt-Gen Viroj Chantarangsi said special police anti-betting units arrested 770 people between June 9 and Sunday — including 132 bookmakers and 574 gamblers.
Police also seized 578,525 baht in cash and confiscated betting slips showing that over 216 million baht had been wagered on the matches.
Pol Lt-Gen Viroj said three major football-gambling websites, out of six countrywide, were busted and two online bookies arrested.
He vowed to beef up efforts to contain Football gambling as the European football leagues resume.
He said gambling was a major contributing factor to crimes such as robbery and murder as people looked for ways to clear their debts.

also pahabol sa latest new with the bangkok post (Thailand English Newspaper as of July 10)..2 weeks ago..there was also a news 1 thai man, drink toomuch coffee to make him awake until 2am just to watch football..na heart attack man ..patay..Grabe...saludo na ko sa ila sa pagka football fanatic nila..talagsa lang ka kita basketball court dri..mostly football ground..maske sa park nila may football ground man... |
