Top Fil-Am player Kelly Williams is excited over the coming PBA Rookie Draft and said he’ll be ready to play for any team in the country’s local pro league.
Everybody seemed happy for the man except for brand-new San Miguel Beer coach Chot Reyes who may not be able to enlist his prized find.
In fact Reyes, who has personally recruited Williams in the United States to play for the national team, has given up hopes of ever getting the 6-foot-4 versatile player in the draft.
"Ako ang nagtanim, ako ang nagsaing pero iba ang kakain ( They’ll reap the fruit of my labor)," said Reyes in jest.
Their only chance of picking Williams in the draft is if Sta. Lucia Realty and Air21 decide to go for other players at No. 1 and No. 2.
But Sta. Lucia officials have reportedly chosen Williams over FEU’s Arwind Santos.
"I’m still riding high at having been cleared to play. Now if that is what it comes to (getting drafted by the Realtors), fine. If not, we’ll pretty much cross the bridge when we get there," said Williams on the prospect of being picked No. 1 overall in the Rookie Draft set Sunday at the Market! Market! in Taguig.
"As far as I’m concerned I’m just happy at the opportunity to be in the draft. Let God’s will be done. I just wanna be able to play in the PBA which I’ve been figuring to do all this time. I’m just ready to play in the league," said Williams when told of the tug-of-war for his services.
The Realtors had to restudy their options after seeing Williams up close in the recent PBA Rookie Camp. The management is reportedly ready to offer Williams the maximum pay in three years.
The agile and versatile player out of Oakland University in Detroit had solid numbers even in the San Miguel-Pilipinas’ two-game series with Lebanon.
He made 14 points in their 105-100 win Wednesday, including a thunderous jam off an alley-oop pass by Jimmy Alapag.
Air21 board representative and team manager Lito Alvarez said they will opt for either Santos or PCU forward Gabby Espinas at No. 2.
San Miguel is likely to pick point guard LA Tenorio at No. 3, off-guard Joseph Yeo at No. 4 and either Mark Isip or Espinas at No. 5.
The Beermen are No. 5 in the draft order. They acquired No. 3 and No. 4 on previous trade deals.
Next in the draft order is Sta. Lucia at No. 6 then Alaska Milk, Talk n Text, Purefoods then Welcoat to close out the first round. In the second round, Welcoat picks first then Talk n Text, Sta. Lucia, Coca-Cola, Air21, Coca-Cola, Coca-Cola, Alaska, Red Bull and Purefoods.
Among the other top prospects in the pool are Boyet Bautista, Mark Andaya, Aaron Aban, Ronnie Bughao, Abby Santos, Chico Lanete and Mark Magsumbol.
Other hopefuls in the draft pool are Rodel Mallari, Ferdinand Daa, Paul Reguera, Ryan Rizada, Frederick Rodriguez, Ryan Cristobal, Ariel de Castro, Richard
Alonzo, Jireh Ibanes, Magnum Membrere, Marlon Kalaw, Orvie Vidad, Glenn Perseveranda, Michael Gavino, Nicole Uy, Jonathan Aldave, Olan Omiping, Erwin Sta.
Maria, John Alcaraz, Alfie Grijaldo, Christian Luanzon, Harold Sta. Cruz, Jerome Paterno, Robert Sanz, Ronjay Enrile, Christopher Apaitan, Al Vergara,Jayson Roque, Philip Butel, Aaron Aban, Erian Daja, Chris Pacana, Manuel Caceres, Donald Dulay, Christian Gutierez and Bob Ilanga.

Yep, I talked to kelly's mom last tuesday and said she's on her way there sa pinas tomorrow (wednesday) to attend the draft day. she said gina brainwash sila ni chot reyes nga aside from sta.lucia had the worst record, they have a problem with the payroll paying their players hehe. i said hindi ka lang mag intra sa decision sng bata mo nga madala-dala kaman kay chot kay basi magwa pana sa newspaper nga gasilabot ka hehe..

Hehehe.... lain gid buot ni chot daan ... number 3 pa sila, wala tsansa makuha si williams, hehehe. If Kelly want's to stay long in an organization ... then SMB is the way to be ... they've always be loyal to their players, then usually SMB lineup is always intact, with their best players untradable. Masi gurang na, hehhee

Yup, tama si Chot, Santa lucia is not a good organization.... bad management...3 of their players are overrated & overpaid ( Aquino, Espino & Duremdes), these players are always injured.
More proof: The reason why SLR cannot be a competitive team is they are focused more on personal attacks at SMC rather than building their own team... which in the end.. they ended up being stunged.
Recall Cabagnot... SLR is at first interested in Miranda and another Fpuro ilipino player.. and not Cabagnot.. it is against their policy of picking Fil ams..
But when they found out that SMB plans to pick Cabagnot at #7.. they jumped the gun on SMB to mess up their draft plans by suddenly picking Cabagnot who they have not seen in the first place...
Talk about Karma... so they deserved what happened when CABAGNOT went AWOL... it can be recalled that Cabagnot initially planned to backed out after being picked by SLR... but changed his mind after SLR treatened him with a lawsuit....
Now the same case happens.. when they found out that Williams will likely be picked by SMB.... they planned to muddle SMB again by planning to pick Williams instead of their original pick Santos...
Hope that SLR will learn from the Cabagnot case.... pick Williams to get back at SMC cause of the recent draft controversy and they will have problems will Williams again who openly signified to play only for SMB.
If I were SLR.. I will rather pick up Santos (end of problem) rather then picking Williams who is really destined to play for SMB...
Karma really works here... do it again and management will have Williams and Cabagnot as problematic players...
Williams will not give his heart and play all out at SLR... especially when playing against SMB....
Remember it was Chot Reyes who discovered Williams
